Rooftop gardens are important, when creating greener urban environments.
They provide many benefits including:
- effective use of valuable space
- providing a source of nourishment
- habitat for birds, bees and insects; beehives can be incorporated
- help regulate temperature within buildings and combat the urban heat island, this resluts in less energy consumption
- improving air quality
- absorbing noise (by being a natural sound barrier)
- absorbing 80% of the rain, to avoid potential floods
- protecting the roof from weather fluctuations

Green buildings have similar benefits too, and often include rooftop gardens. They are also more efficient and use less energy, materials and water than normal houses. Green buildings also encourage cognitive function.
